How to Make and use great Compassion Water ( Dabei Shui ) 大悲水

We now shall present the second of our translations from The Great Comassion Mantra/ Dabei Zhou/ Nīlakaṇṭha Dhāraṇī. This time, we shall deal with the ritual use of the Great Compassion mantra, specifically in the production of magically empowered water called Da Bei Shui -- Great Compassion Water, along with its uses.

This text comes from a tract on the Mantra, published in Singapore. 

The author must admit he cannot understand certain portions of the text fully. His attempts in translating them have been marked in gray shading . If any of his readers can supply more accurate translations, he will be most glad to hear of them. 

Note that the ritual described herein is not the only way in which Great Compassion water is created. Chinese texts online give slightly different rituals for creating Great Compassion water, texts that the author intends to translate at some later date.

[p. 65] 大悲水之念服法 How to create “Great Compassion Water”

凡三宝弟子净口虔修者均可念大悲水疗疾，并布施结绿。念时，先须焚香顶礼，供开水一杯（多少不拘）；应念

Any disciple who takes refuge in the Three Jewels , who is pure of mouth and sincere of heart can create Great compassion water to cure illness, or as a precious gift (并布施结绿). The recitation should start by burning incense and bowing. Then take a cup of plain water (the quantity does not matter) [and then] chant the following: 

（一）香赞，（二）净口业真言，（三）南无大慈大悲救苦救难广大灵感观世音菩萨，（四）千手千眼无碍大悲心陀罗尼（三声），大悲咒四十九遍，（五）补缺真言，（六）南无大悲观世音菩萨（十声）。

2.     The True Words [i.e. mantra] to purify Karma from Speech.

3.     “All Hail [Nanmo] Great Compassionate saviour from hardship and bitterness, Great numinously efficient Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva”

4.     “Thousand hand, thousand eyed Unobstructed Great Compassionate Heart Dharani” thrice, followed by the Great Copassion Mantra 49 times

Note: the words in sentences 3 and 4 in quotation marks I infer as an instruction to chant the actual words printed ; the rest are the names of short mantras and texts. If you intend to perform this ritual, reciting the Mantra 49 times takes at least one hour. The two other mantras mentioned in the text have been set out below:

此大悲水仗佛威力能治一切大小疑难之症。服此水者必须素[66]口先念 「南无大悲观世音菩萨」十声（如小儿或病者无法念时，凡有关系之人均可同声代念）然服下，立刻见效。如服此水者有其家人能发愿放生，或每月斋素几日，尤见功效，至若潜修大德念大悲水时，水可无限而布施亦无限，此随发心者功德如何而定。

The Great Compassion Water contains 仗 the might of all the Buddhas. It can resolve any disorder or illness, no matter how big or small. When administering the water, you must first recite, with a pure mouth “Nanmo Great Compassionate Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva”  Nanmo Dabei Guanshiyin Pusa ten times. (If the water is administered to a small child or a person too weak to speak the words, a relation of the person can say these words on their behalf). The effects will be seen as soon as the water is administered. If a family member makes a vow to release living creatures(放生), or eat a vegetarian diet(斋素) for a few days each month, the water will be all the more effective. If a person concentrates on the Great Virtue in the process of reciting over the water, the water will be limitless, and also of limitless generosity. 大悲咒防火灾发 – To prevent disasters by fire using The Great Compassion Mantra

除用大悲水遍洒居屋可免火灾外，可改备黄元纸一张，念咒时仪式同上述；每念大悲咒一遍于此黄纸上印一红〇，共念大悲咒四十九遍（即印七〇成一行，共七行）并于四角〇上，每角加念观音灵感真言（即十小咒之一）一遍，加一小 。 于角上大〇内，然后将此咒纸焚于各家灶君坐前，能免一宅火灾。如念咒者功德圆满能使四周邻舍同收法益，不遭回禄。

To prevent fires, one method would be to splash Great Compassion Water on the house. Another method is this: Take a piece of yellow paper 黄元纸. Recite the mantra in the fashion described above. Every time the mantra is recited, draw a circle in red on the paper. Recite the mantra 49 times (arranging the circles in 7 rows of 7 circles each).  Then on each of the circles in the four corners, recite the Numinously Efficient True Words of Guanyin (to be found in the Ten Small Mantras) once, adding a small dot in each of the [aforesaid] circles each time.  Then take this Mantra-paper and burn it before the altar of the family’s God of Earth. Doing so will remove every disaster by fire. If the virtue功德 of the person who recites this is strong enough圆满, this will also bring benefits the neighbours of the house; they will not encounter Huilu 回禄 . (I.e the God of fire)

Comment: There is nothing to stop the practitioner to perform the two rituals at once; after all, this sheet of paper would prevent them from losing count of recitations. The Numinously Efficient True Words of Guanyin Are given below, (from http://www.gming.org/fozhou/shixiaozhou/139621_2.html ) 

　7、观音灵感真言（梦授咒）--  The Numinously Efficient True Words of Guanyin 

ǎn má ní bā mī hōng。má gé ní yá nà。jī dū tè bā dá。

jī tè xiē nà。wēi dá lǐ gé。sà ér wò ér tǎ。
积特些纳。微达哩葛。萨而斡而塔。

bǔ lǐ xī tǎ gé。nà bǔ là nà。nà bǔ lǐ。
卜哩悉塔葛。纳补啰纳。纳卜哩。

diū tè bān nà。nuò má lú jí。shuō là yē suō hē。
丢忒班纳。喏麻嚧吉。说啰耶娑诃

Note that the first sentence of the mantra: ǎn má ní bā mī hōng is none other than the Chinese transliteration of that celebrated Mantra Om Mani Padme Hum.
